Type 1 Diabetes and New Technologies

Type 1 diabetes is an autoimmune disease of genetic and environmental causes that usually arises during childhood or adolescence. Its progression is rapid and leads to the almost complete loss of the pancreatic islets that make and release into the blood the hormone insulin as well as others related to blood sugar control. Therefore, an early detection of the disease and an immediate therapeutic approach is required in order to delay disease
progression and, above all, its complications, since there is still no cure for this disease. This line of research aims to carry out clinical studies and clinical trials in people with type 1 diabetes to 1) optimize current treatments with the different insulins available on the market, including the improvement of other metabolic processes, such as inflammation and oxidative stress, that are linked diabetic complications, 2) improve clinical practice approaches for people with diabetes, such as telemedicine, that is, healthcare assistance for people with diabetes without having to move from home, and 3) promote the application and optimization of diabetes technology such as apps and smart technology that help with managing weight, exercising and carb counting, insulin pumbs, continuous monitoring, flash and smart systems, and the so-called artificial pancreas systems that allow monitoring system working together the infusor to automatically optimize glycemic control.
